He gained international attention during the 2010 FIFA World Cup and was nominated for the Golden Ball Award which is awarded to the tournaments best player. Follow his breakout performance at the World Cup, he was transferred to Real Madrid in August of 2010 after months of speculation that he would join one of Europe's top clubs.
