Walcott caught the eye of a talent scout from Southampton FC while playing for his local side at the age of 14 and was quickly signed as an apprentice in 2004. Despite his young age and slight build he progressed into the first team the following year, breaking the club record for the youngest player to turn out for the south-coast side at just 15 years and 175 days. He scored five goals in 23 appearances for the second division side during 2005/06 before Arsenal won the much-documented race for his services, securing his signature for an initial €7.3m fee which could rise to €17.5m depending on appearances and achievements.
